Second-year students of Fanshawe’s Fashion Marketing and Management Program will partner with Goodwill industries to host a new edition of ‘The Story’.
During the last 15 years, students have ran the fair as a fundraiser to promote sustainability and mental health awareness.
‘’In class, we talked about the fact that so many of us have been affected by mental health, whether it was family, friends, or classmates. The conversation is about listening and not judging each other. By supporting the event you are supporting the success of students,’’ says Emenike Okereke, one of the students organizing the event.
Each student involved in the pop-up fair receives a coupon from Goodwill, being used to buy the clothes and get them ready for the exhibition. At Fanshawe, students are divided into groups, focusing on different clothing styles.
He says Goodwill has the same mission statement as students enrolled in the program, and that’s why he believes the company is a good fit for the collaboration.
‘’We brainstormed and came up with a particular design and a team. So we decided to focus on white t-shirts, black t-shirts, and we had denim prints and denim cut out the most of these outfits. I’ve had other clothes like dresses, normal shirt, and pants both for
male and female. So we had to put all these together and all the products we used to do this up-cycle, with the material that came from Goodwill.’’
‘’We have fantastic products. They really look good and each piece has a different story to tell. So, this is about the story, and every outfit has a story.’’
Chioma Asuzu, a student from the same group, says it’s important to be careful about what kind of clothes we are looking to buy and to analyze why we are buying them.
‘’We just want to be able to protect our environment. Fashion requires large amounts of water, energy, and chemicals. And even disposing this garments contributes to pollution and waste so that’s why we have been promoting sustainable fashion.’’
Asuzu invites all students interested in Fashion to join the fair on February 15th , from 7 to 10 PM at Canada Life Village Square, in Innovation Village.
