The middle of Canadian winter is a time where the temperature typically reaches a freezing point. Hockey fanatics take advantage of this time to lace up their skates and head down to their local pond to play puck.
Other people prefer to challenge themselves and build their own rinks in their backyard. Sotiris Lerikos, has been building rinks for many years in and was faced with disappoint due to the mild winter.
There’s years when I do want to build a rink. I used to check the weather every day and hope for absolute freezing temperature” said Lerikos. Historically, Ontario winters reach as low as -30 degrees, but with the El Nino weather in effect thats not the case.
“From like 2016 to like 2020. There was consistent weather where I know that every winter it would be minus 10 for like weeks on end” said Lerikos
Despite the disappointment of this season, the weather is calling for some colder days, giving the players a chance to lace up their skates before spring time.
“if I can get friends family to get going to plan to meet up but with weather being so warm this year, that has definitely cut into that opportunity”. Lerikos said
