The federal government announced this past week stating the carbon tax would be increasing 23 per cent by April 1st. According to a study conducted by Nanos Research in 2023, about 46 per cent of Canadians think the carbon tax is ineffective, while 21 per cent think its effective.
Liz Sheil, owner of Applewood farms, relies on the on gas to keep the farms operations going but has made things difficult.
” We do use some fuel, but we try to use more human labor and not have to use a machine to do things because we are a small scale farm so we can do that as much as we can but that again all those costs have gone up” says Sheil.
Aside from it affecting operations, its had a domino effect like the prices for customers.
“we do need to bring in for instance grain in order to feed our chicken to feed our pigs and things like that those costs have because of the carbon tax has gone up by 20% Which automatically causes us to increase our prices that we sell our product for our customers.” says Sheil
The government plans to annually increase the tax till 2030, as part of its campaign to reduce the use of carbon emissions.
