Summer job market stable at Fanshawe despite national decline
Summer employment in Canada has dropped 22 per cent since last year, according to job site Indeed.ca. But at Fanshawe College, the numbers are holding steady.
“What we’re seeing right now at the college itself — summer employment remains stable,” said Darlene O’Neill, director of employment and student entrepreneurial services at Fanshawe. “Our students are getting part-time summer jobs. They’re getting their summer jobs. They’re getting summer co-ops.”
O’Neill said she’ll be watching the current tariffs situation closely, as it affects manufacturing in London and the surrounding areas. She said trickle-down effects from larger industries could also impact students.
O’Neill urged students to take advantage of the school’s job search support.
“I would encourage students who are still looking for summer jobs to visit our career services or reach out to their career consultant — they’re all listed on the portal by program,” she said. “Oftentimes, it could just be going door to door and handing out your resumé the old-fashioned way, rather than using an online job site.”
She also warned students to be cautious about scams when searching for work.
“Please be very careful where you’re applying to jobs. Don’t use Facebook to apply for jobs — they’re usually a scam. And if it smells like a scam, then it probably is a scam,” O’Neill said.
“If somebody’s offering a student $25 an hour to be an office assistant, it’s a scam.”
