LONDON, Ont. — The London Nationals are off to a strong start in the 2025–26 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League season, boasting a perfect record through six games despite significant roster turnover.
The team’s early success comes with a lineup that includes a mix of rookies and just five returning players — a scenario General Manager Tony Mandarelli admits was unexpected.
“It’s a totally different lineup than we anticipated,” said Mandarelli. “We thought we had more returning vets, and we don’t. But we scouted some pretty good hockey players, took a chance on them, and it looks like it’s paying off.”
The Nationals are adapting quickly to head coach Brandon Press’ system.
“They’re buying in, working hard, and getting the job done,” said Mandarelli.
Despite the strong start, Mandarelli isn’t expecting an undefeated season.
“We’re on a high right now. We’re not going to go undefeated — that’s not realistic,” he said. “What will matter is how we respond when we do lose.”
One of the team’s key contributors has been returning forward Austin Pomerleau, a 05-born player who leads the Nationals in points and serves in the club’s leadership group.
“He’s highly skilled, a great skater, and he’s been great with the hockey club,” said Mandarelli.
Among the standout new additions is Cruz Ferguson, acquired from Chatham.
“He’s been an ace in the hole, a diamond in the rough,” said Mandarelli.
Other notable newcomers include defensemen Brody Dunbar, Cody Wood, and Cooper McCaslin — the latter two being London Knights draft picks.
With a young core and strong performances early in the season, the Nationals are positioning themselves as serious contenders in the GOJHL.
The organization also prides itself on player development. Mandarelli points to recent alumni who have moved on to the NHL and university programs.
“Since I’ve been here, we’ve had two NHL first-round picks and one fourth-rounder. One of our players also received an offer from Clarkson University,” he said. “We put a lot of time and effort into making sure our players are confident, developing and enjoying their time here.”
The Nationals will look to extend their unbeaten streak when they face the Ayr Centennials on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Western Fair Sports Centre.
