Woodland Cemetery in West London is dealing with the aftermath of a troubling act of vandalism. Over the past week, several trees on the cemetery grounds were cut down by someone using a chainsaw. The incident has left staff concerned for the safety of visitors and for the damage done to a space meant for remembrance.
General Manager Kerry Blackwell described the cemetery as a peaceful place where people come to memorialize their loved ones. “It’s very meaningful,” she said, reflecting on her role as caretaker for nearly 60,000 individuals at the cemetery.
The damaged trees include a special memorial tree, planted more than a decade ago. Blackwell said staff have tried to contact the family connected to the tree, but have not been able to reach them.
She added that the cemetery has faced thefts in the past year, including stolen flowers, vases, and other personal items left by families. “I just couldn’t believe that someone would do that,” Blackwell said, speaking about the latest incident.
The cemetery has reached out to the community through social media to ask visitors to help watch over the property. Blackwell also expressed gratitude for support from groups like ReForest London, which will help replace the damaged trees.
While the investigation is ongoing, Woodland Cemetery staff say they remain committed to maintaining a safe and peaceful space for all who visit to honor their loved ones.
