A London resident who relies on paratransit says he was told not to place his food boxes on the floor after picking them up from the food bank.
Jeffrey says he tried to carry what he could, but staff said it wasn’t allowed. “We put some in our lap and some on the seat next to us, but the driver still said it was unacceptable,” he said.
He believes the policy makes it hard for people with disabilities to access essential services like the food bank. “They’re taking away our rights to access an essential service just because we can’t hold on to all of the boxes,” Jeffrey said.
Councillor Skylar Franke, who sits on the London Transit Commission, says she brought this issue forward after hearing about Jeffrey’s experience. She says she wants to make sure the rules don’t stop people from bringing home their food.
Franke explained that the commission has asked staff to review the policy to find a safer and fairer solution. She added that if the issue can be fixed through policy updates or retraining, it could happen quickly, but if bus changes are needed, it might take longer.
XFM News reached out to the London Transit Commission for comment but did not receive a response.
