The Fanshawe Student Union hosted “Be a Kid Again” on Wednesday in Forwell Hall. This event was made for students to relax, have a mental health break, and reconnect with themselves during midterm season by the use of nostalgia.
The hall was busy with students stopping in for a quick visit between classes, some came with friends, others came alone.
“It gives people an opportunity to feel nostalgia and take a break from their classes.” said Douglas Peters, vice-president of student life at Fanshawe.
“We’re coming up on midterms, school’s getting a lot more stressful, assignments are stacking up, so this is just a great opportunity to take a break from that for a minute,” Peters said.
During the busy season of midterms, many students focus on approaching deadlines and studying for exams. Time isn’t always made to take a break and focus on mental health, but stepping away, even just shortly from academics to take time for yourself, can make all the difference.
The use of nostalgia gives students a feeling of comfort, safety, and relaxation during these times.
This event had old classics from everyone’s childhoods like cereal, retro video games, board games, bracelet-making, cartoons, Play-Doh, puzzles, and colouring books.
“It’s a bunch of retro stuff that most people would’ve enjoyed from their childhood,” Peters said.
The atmosphere was similar to opening a childhood time capsule. The familiar cartoons and games brought a sense of playfulness to the serious, and busy college atmosphere.
As midterm season continues all students are encouraged to prioritize their well-being alongside academics. It’s important to recognize when support is needed, students should never be afraid to reach out and ask for help, whether it be from friends, family or Fanshawe support services.
