Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings is the newest Marvel blockbuster. The film is an origin story of the famed superhero Shang-Chi, who utilizes mythological martial arts-based powers. The film picks up on the storyline of the Ten Rings ( the organization that first kidnapped Tony Stark back in the first Iron Man film), who was last seen in Iron Man 3. Canadian Actor Simu Liu, best known for his role in Kim’s Convenience, stars as Shang Chi in Liu’s first blockbuster movie role.
The film has a very well-paced story. Once you reach the film’s point when you feel like everything is about to go crazy, you aren’t left bored from the build-up. The payoff in the climax of the film is also tremendous. It is easily one of the best last acts of any Marvel origin film as it delivers on everything previously promised or teased.
The dialogue in the film also felt very natural and not too cheesy. Unfortunately, Marvel films can sometimes become corny with too many one-liners. You don’t have to worry about this happening here. The fight scenes in the film are also some of the best in Marvel movie history. The choreography is intense and keeps the movie feeling exciting all the way through. The implementation of martial arts helps make the film seem real enough to believe what you are seeing. An excellent collection of characters make a somewhat serious film feel lighthearted and funny at times. I won’t spoil who those characters are for you; that’s for you to find yourself. The production elements like costumes, cinematography, and the use of colors, stay in tune with what’s happening and never feel out of place. That is something director Destin Cretton has done very well.
As for my personal opinion on the film, I loved it. I felt like it was one of the better origin films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was one that fans were unsure of due to the popularity of Shang-Chi’s comics. But Marvel proved the doubters wrong and delivered a film that introduces a key player into Marvel films for years to come. If you have not seen Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings yet, I would highly suggest checking it out. This movie is Marvel just doing what they do best, making great films.
