519 Sports has seen exponential growth over the last few years. It started off as a small company that covered local high school and Junior sports in the Kitchener and Waterloo areas. They are hoping to start covering more games in the London region in the months to come.
The owner Darren Stevenson started 519 after he was let go from CTV news Kitchener working as a sports reporter. “I realized no one was covering local sports, and people still wanted to watch and hear about what is going on in the community”
They have been covering around thirty to forty games per week in the last few weeks. Brandon Bax was Darren’s first full-time worker since 2018. “I never thought that we would be able to cover this many games in a week”
The growth has come fast for 519 and they have started to expand out of the Kitchener Waterloo region. They have started to film more in London but are hoping to do more in the next few months.
“I see it really, maybe even trying to reach out a little bit further south, maybe trying to get a little bit more into London, maybe more. We’ve grown a lot in here on Perth, so I think just more growth around the edges.” Bax talked about how they are starting to see lots of counties wanting to get their local junior hockey team or junior football teams covered.
They have used social media in their favor by posting all of their videos on youtube, Instagram, and Twitter. Darren talked about how that is what teenagers use to watch games and found if they want to have their games watched they need to put it on the socials that younger people watch.
In the months to come they want to have more 519 cameras at the local sporting events in the city of London
