With a new school year starting, Fanshawe College students are settling into classes and looking for places to study. With the hallways, common areas and the library always being packed, it can be hard for students to focus, especially during busy times.
We spoke with students Miguel Mendoza, Noralhudn Abdulrahman, Anna Jimenez from student services, and Front Desk Administrator Fanshawe Student Union (FSU), Moria Jasquez about whether they think Fanshawe has enough spaces, and if there’s any plans on building more.
“..If I’m not focussed, I’m not putting in my 100 per cent effort..” said Miguel Mendoza.

The biggest issue with the study spaces that students are talking about is not knowing how to book-out a study space.
The main request students have for Fanshawe College is to post more on how to book-out the spaces. “Maybe posting more about the study rooms, how to book them or doing a little tutorial for students. I think that will help.” said Anna Jimenez, student services.
Moria Jasquez, front desk administrator for FSU, said “… I do know however, that the school has been working to refresh spaces and make it more welcoming for students… Expansion wise, not too sure.. but it is in mind.”

Students need a space to be able to relax and study. It is a crucial part in school so that students are able to have good mental-health, and finish work on time.
Fanshawe students can walk around for several minutes to only find a seating area that has crowds of loud students.
Noralhudn Abdulrahman said, “[It is] so hard. There’s always people in it, so it’s so hard to find a space here.”

For students who are having trouble finding a suitable place to study, checking different areas of campus and asking staff about avaliable spaces can provide additional options. “Specifically within the student centre.. we do have a lot of lounges.” said Moria Jasquez.
With classes now in session, access to study space remains part of the everyday student experience at Fanshawe College.
