It was a tough day for Western Mustangs soccer.
The CIS top-ranked women’s team lost their first match of the season to the York Lions, 2-1, and the men’s side fell 1-0. It’s the second year in a row that the Lions have given the men’s team trouble, after sweeping them in both games last year.
The men’s side held even with York until a goal in the 37thminute that barely crossed the line. They narrowly missed on several opportunities to tie the game, including twice in extra time.
Despite the loss, Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco says he thought his team played well.
“I actually thought that we took control of the first half and created a little bit more than they did,” Basacco says. “Unfortunately, we gave up that little goal at the end of the first half. [In the] second half, we made some adjustments in terms of trying to get a little bit more strength up top, but it kind of changed the flow of the game for us and it got a bit scrambly.”
It’s the second year in a row that the Lions have given the men’s team trouble, after sweeping them in both games last year.
Sunday, the Mustangs will look to rebound on the road against Guelph.
