The Canadian Food Guide recommends that Canadians consume less dairy milk. Dairy isn’t completely eliminated, instead the guide encourages more water and plant based proteins. Founder of local vegan cheese manufacturer, Margaret Coons, says that the change isn’t surprising.
“It really reflects the ways people’s diets are changing. People are eating less dairy and we find that our consumer base are a lot of vegans, but, there are a lot of people who don’t eat dairy for various reasons. I think the shift towards alternatives and quality plant based products is definitely happening.”
Coons is the founder of Nuts For Cheese, a non-dairy product that uses cashews instead of milk. The product comes in five different flavours that are made by hand from fermented organic cashew milk.
She says that she has noticed the increase in the vegan community in London.
“I used to work as a chef for Veg Out, and at that time that was the only vegan restaurant in town. I think there’s like five or six restaurants now. There’s numerous plant based companies making different vegan products. I think the community is growing a lot.”
Veganism has become more popular over the years, and Coons does not see a stop anytime soon.
“I think people are becoming a lot more conscience of the environmental impact of the food that they’re eating. People are also becoming a lot more conscience of their health and how the food that they’re eating makes them feel. I think people are starting to care more about the animals as well, so they want to eat foods that make them feel goof from an ethical standpoint.”
