The annual ice fishing derby in the Sarnia Bay has been cancelled after temperatures rose and rain poured over the city.
The event which was scheduled for February 16, has caused many avid fisherman to be sad. Last year the derby saw its most amount of participants in its 16 year existence with 300 people.

Lyle Gee from Sarnia was saddened by the news, “My son and I love participating in this event, it’s kind of of our family day thing even though my wife doesn’t come out. Last year we didn’t get very lucky but it was great to see all the people participating.”
This cancelation is not anything new. Two of the last three years, the event has been cancelled due to the warm weather.
The ice must be five inches thick to allow people on for fishing. The past week of up and down temperatures made the ice unsafe for those looking to ice fish.
The Gee family is hoping they will be able to get back on the lake soon enough, “This week coming up has temperatures in the minuses so hopefully we’ll be allowed to get out there. We haven’t been yet but hopefully we can get out a couple times this year.”
Those fishing can expect to catch Rainbow trout and lots of perch according to the experienced fisherman.
Flood warnings were issued last week from the warm weather.
