A gypsy fortune teller brings her crystal ball to life to read the future.
What do you imagine when you read the word ‘medium’? Maybe something that isn’t large or small. But maybe you thought of something a little more fantastical in nature. A medium is someone who claims they are able to communicate with the dead.
In recent years reality television programs featuring mediums have gained enormous popularity. Clips from shows like The Long Island Medium and The Hollywood Medium get millions of views on YouTube.
With claims as big as talking to the dead, it seemed prudent to hear from one of these people directly.
Reverend Carol Burrows says that she is a trained medium at the London Spiritualist Church on Doulton Street. While speaking to XFM News, she shared what exactly a medium was and if she thinks the movies get it right.
“A medium is someone who can connect with spirits, most often we connect with loved ones on the otherside. There is no such thing as death, just this veil that runs between our life and the other side. A lot of people have their own ideas of what they think mediumship would be, but the movie Sixth Sense was a wonderful movie to give people an idea that there can be communication between the worlds. But you have to remember these movies are dramatized.”
She went on to describe different ways people can tap into their abilities as mediums.
“There’s a lot of different ways. Whichever one of our sense the spirit wants to use the most. I know in training the most common ability is to feel a general presence, which is called clairsentience. There is also the ability to see, called clairvoyance. Those of us who trained for it, we pick it up slightly different. I don’t see a full picture, but an image of a specific area.”
To get an alternative perspective on using mediums, especially in times of grief, we spoke with Nicole Cormier. Nicole is a psychologist, but her stance on the practice may surprise you. Check it out in the video below!
