A local organization is offering free monthly meetings for those dealing with grief and seeking a greater support. The meeting is called the Adult Sibling Loss Support and focuses on helping individuals in need to cope with the loss of a sibling or family member and move on with their everyday lives.
There are many ways in which someone can deal with the loss of a sibling and often times, individuals tend to go through this process on their own which can be quite lonely and sad. This is where this support meeting comes into place. It facilitates the process and those involved are able to talk and let their emotions out, and most importantly, share similar experiences with others in the meeting.
“There will be people sitting in the room with you that get it, and that can understand all the very many ways that you are impacted by a loss, so it provides validation to everyone involved,” said Cheryl Wituik the program coordinator
Cheryl is a registered Social worker, and also holds a BA degree in Thanatology. A lot like many individuals joining these meetings, she has also gone through a rough time in her life, making her story quite unique. “I am a bereaved sibling, my brother Mike died suddenly in 2010. So, as well as being the facilitator of this group, I am also a peer in the true sense of the word to our members,” she added.
Cheryl has also partnered with King’s University Social Worker students. Wituik is a former Social Worker graduate who is now also the supervisor for the program. “Right from the start they learn how to engage with members who call for support or enquiries. Then they move into completing actual formal new intake appointments,” she added
For those interested, these meetings will be offered once a month, free of charge with the purpose of solely help out individuals in the community in their moments of most vulnerability.
