St. Thomas police have released more details about the fatal pedestrian crash. Five people were struck by a pickup truck that went out of control yesterday and jumped the curb at Talbot and Inkerman Streets.
The child killed has been identified as 11-year old Aiden Curtis. Police Chief Marc Roskamp issued a statement calling it a terrible tragedy that has affected the family, friends and community.
“I can confirm that St. Thomas Police Service members will continue to be a resource for the family, all witnesses and those affected as the investigation continues.”
Police are also working with the family of a woman who remains in critical condition in hospital. Three other pedestrians were treated for non-threatening injuries.
19-year old Nicholas Lemke appeared in court today charged with Impaired Driving Causing Death and Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm.
It’s reported Lemke has been released, but reasons and terms of the release are under a publication ban. He’s scheduled for another court appearance August 8.
St. Thomas police say impaired driving by alcohol and drugs or a combination increased 19 per cent in 2022.
Chief Roskamp says police will continue to arrest, charge and advocate for strong sentences for those who fail to recognize community expectations and the laws surrounding impaired driving.
“Our message is clear when it comes to impaired driving and the significant threat it poses to public safety. You have
been warned – don’t do it.”
