Starting on Canaday Day, Londoners will no longer have to deal with the annoying task of renewing their license plate.
As of July 1st, the Ontario government says license plates will automatically renew within 90 days of expiring for drivers who have valid insurance and no outstanding tickets. This will apply to passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds. If the license plate cannot be renewed automatically, the owner will be notified and required to manually renew their license plate online or in person at Service Ontario.
“The automatic licence plate renewal program stems from our government’s unwavering commitment to deliver modern, seamless and time-saving services,” said Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s minister of public and business service delivery and procurement. “By utilizing innovative technological solutions to streamline and improve government services, we are saving Ontarians precious time and money.”
Vehicle owners can ensure they do not miss digital notifications about issues related to automatic renewal by signing up through the Service Ontario website. Anyone who signs up will be sent notifications through email, text, or voicemail if their licence plates cannot be renewed 90, 45, and 10 days before expiry, and again at 72 hours after expiry.
The provincial government estimates the new system will save Ontario drivers over 900,000 hours per year.
Until automatic renewals take effect, vehicle owners are required to manually renew their plates at no cost. Ontarians can check their licence plate status at ontario.ca/platerenewal.
