The London Public Library offers a program called “Early Engineering” where children aged 4 and up can learn and explore the world of engineering.
The program aims to get kids to think outside of the box through interactive activities.
Each week, the program creates challenging tasks like how to build a boat or how to make a stool out of newspapers which fosters kids’ ability to problem-solve.
Digital Literacy Facilitator, Stacy van der vlag says that the program has been in high demand.
“We’ve definitely seen an increase in the amount of people asking for programs like this. They want their kids to be involved in problem-solving, and taking initiative, and looking at how the world works.” says van der Vlag.
Families tell van der Vlag that the material taught in the classes are continuously used at home as well.
“Those sorts of things where they’re extrapolating from the smaller projects that we do here becomes this giant activity that the family becomes involved with, uhm, it’s really cool because we’re igniting that in them, a little bit. It’s exciting to hear what they’re doing with it.” added van der Vlag.
Early Engineering continues to fulfill the purpose of teaching kids about STEAM-related subjects through fun, hands-on, and engaging activities.
