Ontario’s minimum wage will increase to $17.60 an hour from $17.20 on Oct. 1, giving employees a modest increase as the cost of living continues to rise.
For Fanshawe College students, though, the increase is welcome relief.
“Honestly, that would be a great idea,” said Matt, a student at Fanshawe. “It would definitely help with covering rent, food, all that. I think they need to increase it a little higher, because individuals cannot live any longer making so little.”
Desmond, a student at Fanshawe, indicated he was encouraged to see the steady rise in Ontario’s base rate.
“I’m glad it’s up and up because I recall way back when it was something like $15.25, and I was making nothing,” he said. “It’s great for our economy and the kids coming in trying to enter the industry.”
The increase comes as Ontarians continue to struggle with higher prices for groceries, rents, and transport. For students, it’s all about small increments that make a big difference.
