Prime Minister Mark Carney will make a trip from Sept. 25 to 28 to the United Kingdom in an effort to grow Canada’s economic presence on the world stage.
Carney will meet with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as leaders from Australia, Spain, Denmark, and Iceland, during the visit.
On the agenda are meetings with business and institutional leaders as the prime minister strives to expand trade, investment and co-operative opportunities in such key sectors as technology, clean energy and strategic minerals.
Carney’s office frames the visit as a larger strategy to diversify Canada’s global relationships, as tensions with the United States around trade policies mount.
Canada already has the U.K. among its leading foreign trading partners, with two-way trade in goods and services reaching around $61 billion in 2024.
But officials caution that to stay competitive and resilient, Canada needs to deepen ties with partners beyond traditional partners.
Experts say that this visit does not just tighten Canada-U.K. relations but also indicates Ottawa’s determination to reset its diplomacy and trade interests in a changing world.
