Western University Homecoming weekend will draw thousands of students, and first responders say growing measures are being taken to keep the community safe.
London Fire Chief Matt Hepditch revealed that inspectors will be stationed in the Richmond and Broughdale neighbourhood to work with police and paramedics. “We can enforce the Ontario Fire Code as applicable during these unauthorized street parties,” Hepditch said, referencing overcrowded housing, open burning and rooftop parties.
Paramedics are also preparing for a busy weekend. “There will be additional staffing on duty, particularly in those neighbourhoods where we’ve had large unsanctioned street parties in previous years,” said Samantha Vollick, PAD and public education coordinator with Middlesex-London Paramedic Service. She said common calls can include alcohol and drug-related emergencies, injuries and dehydration.
The London Police Service will also have more of a presence thanks to the help of off-duty agencies. “We will have enforcement with regard to hosting or attending a party of trouble, not leaving a location, and using an unauthorized road,” said Sgt. Sandasha Bough.
All three agencies are encouraging students to look out for one another, plan ahead and party responsibly.
