Walmart says it plans to eliminate synthetic food dyes and more than 30 other ingredients, including certain preservatives and additives, from its food brands by 2027.
The company said Wednesday the 14-month reformulation plan will focus primarily on Great Value, its largest private-label food brand.
Walmart stated that it has been working for years to transition to natural food dyes, but the timing of the announcement reflects the evolving industry trends.
The move comes amid growing attention from American consumers and the U.S. government, particularly under the former presidency of Donald Trump, regarding the ingredients in packaged foods.
Company food scientists are working to ensure that products made with natural dyes maintain the same taste and texture, while matching colours as closely as possible.
