London Free Press is reporting that politicians supported City Hall’s plan to set up a modular homeless shelter community in the industrial complex despite concerns.
60 modular rest areas have been proposed for city-owned properties northeast of Max Blouse Drive and Cheese Factory Road intersection, mainly industrial and rural areas near Highbury Avenue. The project includes 24-hour field security, food and laundry services, transportation, garbage collection, storage and indoor common space.
“There’s still more people on the streets than ever who are unsheltered and winter is coming . . . We need to take some action to provide some spaces through the winter. This is one of the ways that we can take some action very quickly,” Mayor Josh Morgan said after Wednesday’s meeting of the community and protective services committee.
Morgan prepared 60 modular shelters by the end of September and issued a strong order to operate until April 2027. No politician expressed his opposition to the plan externally.
Council will decide whether to approve the plan at its October 14 meeting.
