London ACORN members host ‘Solidarity Rent Freeze Rally’ on Thursday.
ACORN members are leading a solidarity action outside Housing Minister and MPP Rob Flack’s office from 12:00 on October 23rd, highlighting the need for urgent action to protect affordable housing in Ontario.
This event was held to draw attention to the interconnectedness of social issues faced by people living on low and middle incomes.
ACORN members are urging the government to immediately freeze rents, introduce full rent controls and at least double social assistance rates.
President of ACORN Canada Alejandra Ruiz-Vargas said she was listening the same stories of tenants who are going up in rent and losing their homes.
“That’s why we’re rallying at Queens Park with a clear message to Premier Ford as MPPs return to work: we need an immediate rent freeze—not forever, but until the market cools down and people can stop working two or three jobs just to survive. In the long term, we need full rent control—on all buildings, including new ones, and on every unit, even after tenants move out,” said Ruiz-Vargas.
She added that the current system allows people to be pushed into homelessness, while corporate landlords have cash on hand.
ACORN Canada is a national independent organization of low-and-moderate income families with 186,000+ members in 31+ neighbourhood chapters across 6 provinces.
