Canada Post is cutting jobs as part of a corporate restructuring effort launched earlier this year.
The Crown corporation has not said how many employees are affected or which regions will see reductions. The layoffs come as the company works to reach a new collective agreement with its unionized workforce, which has been holding rotating strikes over wages, job security and working conditions. In a statement, Canada Post said the restructuring is aimed at modernizing operations and adapting to declining letter mail volumes and growing parcel demand.
The federal government announced major changes to the postal service’s mandate last month, allowing an expansion of community mailboxes, new delivery standards and the potential closure of some post offices.
Union representatives have criticized the timing of the layoffs, saying they undermine bargaining efforts and threaten services in rural and remote communities. Canada Post has posted several years of financial losses and says modernization is necessary to ensure long-term sustainability.
