Thousands of Ontario families will soon have better protection from the dangers of smoke and carbon monoxide.
Enbridge Gas Ontario, the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and the London Fire Department launched the 2025 Safe Community Project Zero campaign on Monday at the London Fire Memorial Headquarters.
“Project Zero is about making sure those who need these alarms most — seniors, vulnerable residents and families who may not be able to afford them — get them first,” said Matt Hepditch, deputy fire chief of the London Fire Department.
Now in its 17th year, the initiative will distribute more than 14,000 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to homes across London and Ontario.
Since it started, Project Zero has distributed over 115,000 combination alarms throughout the province. The program was created to eliminate fire- and carbon monoxide-related deaths.
“One major goal of our Fire Master Plan is to develop relationships and partners in our community that can assist us in our never-ending goal to protect the lives of our precious community,” Hepditch said.
Representatives from Enbridge Gas attended the launch event, which was also attended by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, the Office of the Fire Marshal, and the City of London, including Deputy Mayor Shawn Lewis.
The initiative also includes Project Assist, which provides fire departments with training resources to help educate communities about fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
