Fanshawe’s Fuel Esports, along with the Western Electronic Gaming Association (WEGA) from Western University, are hosting a 12-hour multi-game tournament to raise funds for the Children’s Health Foundation, Saturday.
Dubbed “The Battle of the Forest City”, the event’s goal is to raise at least $1000 through the Extra Life fundraising program- where donations fund critical live saving treatments, healthcare, and child life services.
Adam Boyce is the media lead for Fuel, he says they plan to exceed the fundraising goal. “We’re gonna bump that goal up if we’re getting close- we’re not just gonna stick to a thousand.”
Other Fuel staff are also confident in the event. Valentina Virviescas-Medina is working the tournament. She says she’s positive that the community will pull through for the donation goal, “I don’t need no optimism. I know we’re beating it.” She continues, “We’re amazing. Our community is amazing. We have both the Western and the Fanshawe community coming together.”
Rocket League player, Alex “shandy.” Shand, from WEGA is looking forward to having the community show up to support them, “It’s always nice to play in front of a crowd instead of staring at your computer monitor at 1a.m, right? So thank you for being here.”
This is the second year Fuel’s running the fundraiser. Virviescas-Medina says that preparing for the tournament went smoother than their inaugural year, “I think we definitely had a lot of challenges last year that we learned from,” continuing that “I think we were able to set it up in less than five hours yesterday.”
The event runs from 10 a.m at Forwell Hall, with six games on the slate:
- Rocket League
- Overwatch 2
- Valorant
- Counter Strike 2
- League of Legends
Fuel says it will continue to accept donations even after the tournament wraps. Anyone can donate through their page on fsu.ca/extralife .
