Londoners with family in the Middle East are closely watching developments after Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in Israeli and U.S. air strikes, intensifying tensions across the region.
Iran has launched missiles toward Israel, while Hezbollah, the Iran-aligned militia group based in Lebanon, has now joined in exchanging fire with Israeli forces near the Lebanon border. The violence has heightened fears of a broader regional confrontation and increased instability across parts of the Middle East.
For some residents in London, the developments are more than international headlines.
Melissa Ghanoum, a Fanshawe College student from Lebanon, said her parents remain in the country amid these tensions.
“Every house was moving, and nobody was asleep because of the sounds and because of how strong the missiles were,” she said.
Ghanoum said neighbourhoods were disrupted by the sound of strikes, prompting families to relocate from one area to another. She said she has been closely monitoring updates from Canada while trying to continue her studies.
“Yesterday, I did not sleep. My eyes were glued to the screen and I’m just watching the news,” she said.
Her mother is pregnant, which she said has added to her concern as the conflict persists.
“My mom’s pregnant. She can’t hear such noises or she could be traumatized,” she said.
The escalation has raised concerns about civilian safety and regional stability. Governments have been monitoring the situation closely as military activity continues, and travel advisories remain in place for parts of the region.
London is home to a significant Middle Eastern community, and many residents maintain close ties to relatives overseas. For families here with loved ones in the affected areas, many of them are filled with constant worry.
Ghanoum said her parents have tried to reassure her, but uncertainty remains amid ongoing tensions.
As the situation evolves, Londoners with ties to the region say they are hoping for de-escalation and stability in the days ahead.
