Actor Luke Perry’s death broke the hearts of generations. Fans were shocked to hear of his passing, believing the age of 52 was too young to suffer a stroke.
Jennifer Hassan is a Manager at the Heart and Stroke Foundation in London, she says that a common misconception about strokes is that it happens to men older in age.
“The reality is having a stroke can happen to anyone, at any age even infants, even an unborn child can have a stroke,” explains Hassan.
Knowing the signs of stroke can save you or someone’s life. Hassan explains the acronym FAST, made to help remember the signs of stroke.
“FAST stands for face, arms, speech, and time. So if you see yourself or someones face drooping on one side, if they’re not able to lift both of their arms, if their speech is jumbled in any way T stands for time it’s time to get them to the hospital for help right away.”
Hassan adds that a person has around 4 hours to get to the hospital after suffering a stroke. She says only 33 percent of stroke survivors make it to the hospital.
“There’s a lot of times we don’t recognize those signs or we just think I have a headache, I’m stressed out over exams I’m just going to go and lie down. So it’s really important that if you even recognize one of those signs of stroke don’t be embarrassed rush to the hospital.”
