The weather is changing and the temperature will soon be below zero.
For many, this means staying indoors and staying warm. Except, for the few that dare to dive into the Great Lakes and surf.
Near London there are two locations that most surfers frequent. Port Stanley on Lake Erie and Kincardine on Lake Huron.
Mitch Taylor owns and operates Life of Leisure Surf and Social Club in London, and has been surfing for years. He says the wind is at its best later in the year.
“The weather really works well in the fall and winter, the cold fronts come in, the wind picks up and that’s where you’ll get those waves.”
In Kincardine, owner of Surfsup Eco Shop, Tarah Coates is busy selling surfing equipment for new and experienced surfers.
With the season starting in the fall, Coates says it’s important for everyone hitting the water to stay warm.
“You’re going to need a wet suit, they come in different thicknesses.”
Coates says typically surfers will want a five millimetre thick suit if they’re going out in the brisk autumn and winter months.
Kincardine has seen a surge of surfers gliding into the town to hit the waves.
Tourism Coordinator for the Municipality of Kincardine, Kelly McDonald, says they always expect the fall to be busy.
“Surfing is our big push in the fall, the Northwest wind is our seller.”
Surfing might not be for everyone, but Coates says if anyone is interested Surfsup offers surfing lessons.
