For many years, if someone wanted to listen to great audio they would have to turn on their radio. Now there are so many audio options, including podcasts.
A podcast is a digital audio file that can be downloaded from a computer or cell phone, and shared around the world. There are a lot of types of podcasts that people can choose from and the Head of Innovation for Zenith Media, Tom Goodwin, says the most popular podcasts focus on an informative structure rather than being entertainment based.
With informative podcasts growing, are local radio stations starting their own podcasts? Here in London, at Global News Radio 980 CFPL, News Anchor Jake Jeffrey, and host of London Live, Mike Stubbs, have their own podcast called Around the OHL.
Stubbs says local radio stations should start their own podcasts, or make their own content available in a digital format.
“If you aren’t doing it already, you have to start… All of the shows that a station creates should be turned into a podcast, we try and send out everything that we do aside from newscasts.”
Stubbs mentioned that if the listener can’t find content on a digital platform they may go to another station that does, something that Jeffrey agrees with.
“You could have a great interview, and if someone isn’t listening at the exact time it airs they’ll miss it, as opposed to an interview on a podcast that’s available at anytime.”
Goodwin agrees, and says local content producers should try and reach a wider audience.
